Genoa – Mixed media, acrylic on canvas, 12″ x 12″

“Genoa, May Day”
Each of my paintings tells a story.
This piece represents Genoa, Italy, which I happened to visit on Labour Day. The red was inspired by the red banners and the red ribbons being handed out on the Piazza Raffaele de Ferrari. The striped border comes from the black and white stone arches and façades of the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo close by.
Though the art piece seems to be a simple three-colour composition, there’s a little subtlety to it. The colours are a mix of classic acrylic to give it the solemnity of the cathedral and industrial spray paint to give it strength. The direction of the paint strokes represent the workers and tourists going in all directions while I was trying to cross the piazza.
